Morgan Dollar Mintage

Many consider the Morgan Dollar as the most popular series within all of American numismatics. It represents the United States’ westward expansion and industrial development during the late 19th century. The series originally ran from 1878-1904 and for one additional year in 1921, with production taking place across four different mint facilities.

While mintages are usually an indicator of rarity, for the Morgan Dollar series, mintage figures are sometimes misleading. Under the Pittman Act, many Morgan Dollars were melted, affecting the number of surviving Morgan Dollars and making higher mintage dates more scarce. In addition, the dispersal of hoards has made low mintage dates more common.

Morgan Dollar Notes:

  • The 1895 Morgan Dollar has the lowest mintage with a mintage of 12,000.
  • The 1889-CC Morgan Dollar is secondary key day issue with a mintage of 350,000.
  • The highest mintage for Morgan Dollars was in 1921, with the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints collectively producing a large quantity. The Philadelphia Mint alone manufactured 44,690,000 coins, contributing to a total production of 86,730,000 Morgan Silver Dollars across all three facilities.
  • In 2021, the series made a comeback as part of the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act. The Philadelphia Mint also produced Morgan Dollars with “O” and “CC” privy marks in honor of the former New Orleans and Carson City Mints, in addition to Morgan Dollars with no mint mark.
  • In 2022, the United States Mint temporarily halted the production of the Morgan Dollar and did not release any coins due to supply chain issues of silver planchets.
  • In 2023, the San Francisco Mint released the 2023-S Reverse Proof Morgan Dollar, which is the first time in history that U.S. Mint has released a Reverse Proof version of the Morgan Dollar.

The tables below presents the mintage figures for each date and mint mark combination for the Morgan Dollar series. For Morgan Silver Dollar populations, consult the latest NGC Census Data.
