The American Innovation Dollar recognizes and celebrates the innovation and pioneering spirit of America. Each coin in the series honors a significant innovation or innovator from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the 5 United States territories. The obverse features a proud depiction of the Statue of Liberty with a unique privy mark for each year. The reverse features four yearly designs depicting an innovation or innovator.
The program was authorized under the American Innovation $1 Coin Act, which was signed into law on July 18, 2018. In total, there will be 57 total designs issued from 2018 to 2032. The first year in the series featured the release of a single introductory coin honoring the issuance of the first American patent.
The American Innovation Dollars are considered numismatic items and are not issued for general circulation. The United States Mint has offered various numismatic products for sale to the public, incorporating the coins.
Uncirculated versions of the coins struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities have been available in 25-coin rolls or 100-coin bags. Proof versions struck at the San Francisco Mint have been available within an annual Proof Set. Finally, Reverse Proof versions struck at the San Francisco Mint have been available individually or within sets.
