The Native American Dollar is a continuation of the Sacagawea Dollar. Launched in 2009, the Native American Dollar features the obverse design from the previous series paired with an annually rotating reverse design. Each reverse design depicts an important Native American person or contribution.
The production levels for circulation strike Native American Dollars have in large part bee determined by the production of Presidential Dollars due to a provision within Public Law 110-82. The law required that the number of Native American Dollars minted and issued shall not be less than 20% of the total number of $1 coins minted and issued for that year.
From 2009 to 2011, the Presidential Dollars were struck and distributed for circulation, resulting in correspondingly high production for Native American Dollars. From 2012 onwards, the United States Mint suspended the production of the Presidential Dollars for circulation, resulting in a drop in production for Native American Dollars.
